The Green Heron
The green heron is a small, stocky and colorful visitor to Birdland.
The wading bird has an iridescent, bluish-green back, chestnut neck, dark cap, and yellowish legs. It’s similar in size to a crow and crouches hunched over when hunting food. It sometimes ruffles a shaggy crest.
I often see this solitary visitor in a low area of fresh water very close to the entrance to the main trail.
